The artificial pond Ballenstedt is an old artificial pond in the Harz in Saxony-Anhalt near Ballenstedt . The Garnwinde and the Sauerbach are dammed in the reservoir; the receiving waters are the Selke , Bode and Saale .

The lake is a dam due to the height of the dam . It was laid out in 1749 to supply water to a neighboring coal mine and is now used for recreation. Drinking water can also be taken during dry periods.
The dam is an earth dam with an inner seal. The water side is secured with a rock fill. The operating facilities consist of flood relief , bottom drain with slide ( harrow ), and stilling basin .
The lake is up to 18 m deep and is a natural swimming pool surrounded by forest; Swimming, diving and fishing are possible.
On April 7, 1969, was a case of high water near the harrow at the dam crest dam failure . The system was then repaired until 1974. The wooden bottom outlet line was replaced by a steel line.
