The art association Roter Keil is an art association with its headquarters in Graz .
The association was founded on July 13, 2012 by Paul Lässer, Martin Maierl and Eero Teuschl. He is mainly concerned with the visual arts . The association's studio has been located in the Graz district of Gries since it was founded and offers space for up to 20 artists on around 400 m².
history
The art association was founded by graduates of the HTBLVA Graz-Ortweinschule who were looking for a place to work. In June 2012, Martin Maierl organized the metal symposium with the title Transformation in the paper factory, a Graz venue. In one week, an eleven ton pile of scrap was processed in a workshop set up for this purpose. The work attitude generated there and the contacts to other artists justified the desire to run a permanent studio.
After the official establishment of the association, the first studio was put into operation on August 8, 2012.
Naming
The name Roter Keil was chosen by the first members from a selection of different names. It is not related to any political ideology. The name was also not influenced by El Lissitzky's 1920 poster Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge . The name was not given any further thought, it was decided in a mobile phone conference - for the sole purpose of being able to make an entry in the association register.
meaning
In retrospect, some explanatory models have been devised.
- The first studio of the Kunstverein is located in the 5th district of the city of Graz , and the Roman number 5 resembles a wedge that tapers downwards.
- On the one hand, a wedge creates space where there is no space, and on the other, it also fills gaps.
- The wedge as a tetrahedron is the first platonic solid
- The wedge is intended to break up old structures and expand the boundaries of art.

studio
The art association Roter Keil has been working in the 5th district, Gries , of the city of Graz on the site of a former car workshop since it was founded in 2012 . The ground floor building has two main halls, which were set up for work on painting and sculptural work. In the premises there is also a 7 m² darkroom for developing photographs and screen printing and a goldsmith's shop . The studio is used by the members to plan and carry out projects, to keep work safe, to create works and to exchange ideas.
