The Kupferberg Sektkellerei was founded in 1850 by Christian Adalbert Kupferberg in Mainz on the Rhine . Various brands of sparkling wine have been produced there since then . The best known is "Kupferberg Gold", a semi-dry to brut- expanded sparkling wine in the lower price segment.

On the Mainzer Kästrich , the winery has the deepest layered champagne cellars in the world, which are seven floors deep and comprise a total of 60 cellar segments and are up to 50 m below the surface. The area on which the winery was located was previously a vineyard area , so there are even older cellars in side wings. The administration building at Kupferbergterrasse 19 was built in 1856 according to plans by the city and cathedral master builder Joseph Laské . In 1872 the sparkling wine cellar was converted into a partnership limited by shares (KGaA). The company grew with the export opportunities created by the railway and with consistent use of trademark rights . Brands, product features, company logos, logos and images are still protected by trademark law and other protective laws in favor of Christian Adalbert Kupferberg Sektkellerei. An extensive exhibition on print media used at the time, including by Emil Preetorius , as well as the world's largest collection of champagne glasses from different eras, can be viewed at the Kupferberg premises.

In 1978 A. Racke GmbH from Bingen acquired a large part of the shares. The “Kupferberg” brand was sold to Henkell & Co. Sektkellerei ( Oetker Group ) in 2004 . The production facilities, which were relocated to the Mainz-Hechtsheim district in the 20th century , have only been used for bottling still wine since then. With effect from January 1, 2008, the winery facilities including the 46 employees and the branded wines bottled there were taken over by Grands Chais de France .
