The "copper engraving collection in the house at Breite Straße 12" in Düsseldorf was created by the secret medical advisor Johann Gotthelf Leberecht Abel (1749–1822).

collection

In the house built for him, he collected copperplate engravings by Marcantonio Raimondi , Albrecht Dürer , Gérard Edelinck , Antoine Masson and Pierre Drevet . Carl Heinrich August Mindel wrote:

“Except for completely complete works, such as the gallery of Florence from the Pitti Palace ; then that of the Palais royal , formerly belonging to the Duke of Orleans and various others, the collection consists of about 7 to 8,000 individual sheets engraved in copper, most of which are engraved by Italian masters and are kept here in 36 portfolios. Among them is a portfolio by Marco Antonio after Raphael , a considerable collection after Nic. Poussin , a similar one after Rubens by old masters, also noted copper engravings and woodcuts by Albert Dürer . The remaining portfolios are arranged according to the various Italian schools. There is also a not inconsiderable collection of portraits, which were made by French engravers of the 17th century, a Gerh. Edelink, Masson, Drevet etc. are engraved. Then there are landscapes by old masters and a collection of original drawings from the Italian schools. Apart from the engravings after Rubens, however, the Dutch school is largely absent. "
