The coppery weevil ( Polydrusus mollis ) is a beetle from the family of the weevils (Curculionidae).

features

The beetles are 6–8.5 mm long. Your body is black. They are covered with long, dense copper-colored scales. In the middle of the neck shield is a vertebra. Their antennae and legs are red. The first antenna element is significantly shorter than the second. The antenna lobe is dark. The front rails have a razor-sharp outer edge. The hind legs are covered with small teeth.

distribution

The beetle species is common in the western Palearctic . The species is widespread in Europe, but is absent on the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean islands. In the north, the species occurs both in the British Isles and in Fennoscandinavia . The species is widespread and common in Central Europe.

Way of life

The beetles live on various deciduous trees (alder, oak, hazel, birch and others) and shrubs, the leaves of which they eat. The larvae feed on the roots of the trees, overwinter in the ground and pupate in spring. The adult beetles can be seen between mid-March and late June. The species reproduces parthenogenetically in Central Europe . Bisexual reproduction has been observed in Montenegro and northern Albania .
