Qurmanghasy Saghyrbajuly ( Kazakh Құрманғазы Сағырбайұлы ; * 1823 in Bökey-Horde (today Schangaqala , Western Kazakhstan ); † 1896 ) was a Kazakh composer and dombra musician. As the founder of Kazakh instrumental music (Küj), he was important for the music history of his country .

life and work

As a child, Saghyrbajuly played the dombra and created his first compositions. During his lifetime he created around 60 compositions for traditional Kazakh musical instruments, including Kishkentay on the Bökey Horde rebels Isatai Taimanow and Mahambet Utemisow , whose revolt he is said to have witnessed himself between 1836 and 1838. His Küj Sary Arka over the north of the Kazakh steppe is particularly appreciated. Other Küjs Kurmangasy are Akbai , Turmeden kashkan and Aday .

He was known as a rebel in the Kazakh steppe. He criticized the inequality among the Kazakhs and spoke out against the Kazakh elite and the authorities of the Russian Empire, which is why he was arrested several times. He was in prisons in Oral and Orenburg .

He is buried in a mausoleum in Astrakhan , where an equestrian statue now stands in his honor.
