The Kurt-Schumacher-Schule (KSS) is a cooperative comprehensive school with upper secondary school based in Karben . The largest general education school in the Wetterau district comprises the three courses of secondary school , secondary school and grammar school and was founded in 1965 in the Groß-Karben district.

history

In the course of the rural school reform, the Kurt Schumacher School was built in 1965 as a central school . At that time it was considered the largest central school in the former Friedberg district and consisted of a primary and secondary school as well as an affiliated special school. After the SPD politician Kurt Schumacher, who died in 1952, was given a name in 1966, the support level was organized in grades 5 and 6 and the secondary school branch was expanded .

After significant organizational changes, from 1972 both the special school and the Groß-Karben elementary school became self-employed as a Pestalozzi school, which was followed in 1980 as a comprehensive school based on the type of school . However, prejudices against the special needs level and cooperative comprehensive school initially kept the number of pupils low. It was only after the support level was replaced by separate entry-level classes in 1988 and through the expansion of the educational program that the number of pupils increased continuously from 1990 onwards. In May 1992 the district council decided to set up an upper secondary school at the KSS. The expansion of the computer room to 20 computers initially took place in March 1993. The 700 pupils are now receiving basic training on the PC as part of the subject of work studies. The school's own pizzeria, 16 working groups and homework support are part of the educational lunch care. Anyone interested can read and play billiards in the library.

From the 1997/98 school year, the first students attend the newly established upper level.

The Kurt Schumacher School is the largest general education school in the Wetterau district with around 1,280 students.

Offers and projects

Upper secondary school

In 1992 the district council approved the establishment of an upper secondary school at the KSS. The first high school students followed this decision in the 1997/98 school year.

In the 2005/2006 school year, the school introduced the Abitur after the twelfth grade (G8). Since the Hessian schools have been able to decide for themselves since 2013 to return to the original model, the school conference unanimously decided in October 2013 to reintroduce the Abitur after 9 years, which has been implemented since the 2016/2017 school year. With the start of the 2019/20 school year, the school will be completely converted back to G9.

School with a focus on music

Since the 1998/99 school year, the Kurt Schumacher School (KSS) has carried out the music project "Wind Class". This project was launched in 1994 by the support company of the Association of German Musical Instrument Manufacturers based on the American model and has since been supported and supervised in Hesse by the Academy for Music Education in Mainz. The experiences with the wind class at the Kurt-Schumacher-Schule have been very positive - the Hessian Ministry of Culture awarded the school again in 2010, 2014 and currently 2018 as a “school with a musical focus”.

Comenius program / Erasmus + partner school

The KSS has been participating in the EU's Comenius program since the 2004/2005 school year and from 2012 was the coordinating school of the two-year Comenius project “Human Rights in Europe”, in which eight schools from 7 different EU countries took part .

Since the current school year (2018/19), the Kurt Schumacher School has been participating in the Erasmus + school partnership program of the Conference of Ministers of Education and the Educational Exchange Service. The European Union finances programs that are carried out jointly by schools from different countries over two years. In addition to the KSS, five other schools are from the Czech Republic (Gymnazium Celakovice) Italy (Liceo Artistico Carlo Levi - Matera) Spain (Colegio Torre de Salinas) Greece (3 Geniko Lykeio of Nea Filadelfia "Miltos Kountouras") Turkey (Konak Mersinli Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi)
