Kurt Kauter (born May 7, 1913 in Limburg an der Lahn , † February 23, 2002 in Gotha ) was a German writer. He also wrote under the pseudonym José Maria Rocafuerte .

life and work

Kauter wrote his first poems in his youth. The discovery of a petrified fossil aroused his interest in geology , which he studied in Würzburg alongside mineralogy and geography and in which he also received his doctorate. Kurt Kauter was a communist and co-founder of the peace movement in West Germany. He moved to Gotha in the GDR in 1958 .

As a geologist, Kauter traveled abroad to research oil deposits, which led to the fact that he put his encounters with Latin American cultures on paper. In the 1960s, books such as Im Schatten des Chimborazo and Under the Southern Cross were created . Kauter's love for the peoples of South America shaped all of his much-read books for children and young people. With the novel Liberator Bolivar he set a monument to the South American independence fighter Simón Bolívar . Kauter was a writer well into old age. At the age of 83 he was honored for his life's work with the highest honor in Venezuela , the Order Mérito al Trabajo - Primera Clase .

His published publications reached a total circulation of around two million copies worldwide.
