Kurt Klamann

Kurt "Kuddel" Klamann (born April 17, 1907 in Zingst ; † April 1, 1984 there ) was a German draftsman and caricaturist. He is considered one of the most popular press illustrators in the GDR . He was known for his drawings of girls in "Eulenspiegel".

Life

Kurt Klamann was born as the son of the forester Paul Klamann. At the age of 14 he went to sea as a cabin boy, sailor and stoker on sailing ships and steamers. In 1926 he joined the KPD . In his novel “Auf wilder Fahrt” he later describes his experiences from seven years of seafaring. He was already drawing and painting in those years. The art professor Max Kaus discovered his talent for drawing and brought him to the Berlin Art Academy in 1928 . Among other things, he was a master student of Hans Orlowski .

In 1931 he began working as a cartoonist and press illustrator for Ullstein and Mosse in Berlin . After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, he was banned from working. He was arrested and placed under police surveillance. In 1943 he was drafted for military service in the navy and used in criminal detachments, among other things, to search for mines. Klamann became a prisoner of war in England, from which he was released in 1946. He returned to Zingst, where he started painting again and took an active part in the development of the town, and was even mayor for a short time.

From 1950 Kurt Klamann worked again in Berlin as a draftsman and caricaturist for various newspapers such as " Eulenspiegel " and had exhibitions at home and abroad. Klamann illustrated several novels and children's books and took on a supporting role in the children's film Die Reise nach Sundevit in 1966 . He was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR and the Association of German Journalists. In addition to his journalistic work, he also created numerous landscape pictures, still lifes, portraits and nude drawings in different materials and techniques. Klamann was best known for his erotic watercolors. In 1982 he was awarded the Silver Patriotic Order of Merit .

In 1984 Klamann died in his house in Zingst.

A number of his works are exhibited in the Zingst local history museum.
