Kurt Lorenz (born January 18, 1914 in Opladen ; † August 16, 1987 in Leverkusen ) was a German artist and caricaturist .

life and work

Born the son of a medical councilor , Lorenz first attended school in Opladen and later the Schloss-Schule Kirchberg . He then studied free painting, portraiture and figurative drawing at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1933 to 1935 . During the Second World War he was taken prisoner by the Soviets . At the end of the war he married his wife Lore in East Prussia , with whom he had two children.

In Düsseldorf he was a member of the artists 'association " Der Malkasten " and after the war a member of the artists' association "Die Leiter" in Leverkusen. Lorenz quickly developed into a sought-after portrait painter in the Leverkusen art scene (which at that time had a large overlap with the management level of Bayer AG ) . His landscape paintings and watercolors were also in great demand. Since Lorenz moved in an affluent environment, most of his abstract works are privately owned and only gradually come into the possession of museums as part of inheritances.

Although he also worked as an advertising artist and despite the financially strong environment, Lorenz was considered to be principled. Kurt Lorenz also worked as a caricaturist for various weekend newspaper supplements and also designed carnival floats . He also worked as a stage and costume designer .

He later worked as an art teacher at the Carl-Duisberg-Gymnasium in Leverkusen and taught at the Leverkusen youth art groups. After a brief serious illness, he died in 1987.

In addition to many solo exhibitions at home and abroad, his works are still often exhibited in the Leverkusen area.

Kurt Lorenz is the grandfather of the theater actress Katharina Lorenz .
