Splitterskyddad Enhets Platform

Hägglunds SEP as a tracked vehicle

The Splitterskyddad Enhets platform ( SEP , German: splitter-protected unit platform ) is a universal platform for armored vehicles . It is being developed by BAE Systems Hägglunds on behalf of the Swedish procurement office Försvarets materielverk (FMV).

Particular attention was paid to the modular design ; As with the Dutch / German GTK Boxer, a special mission module can be mounted on the vehicle platform. This should enable the SEP to fulfill up to 24 different roles.

Other special features are the diesel-electric drive, drive-by-wire and flat screens , which improve the visibility of conventional corner mirrors by means of externally mounted video cameras . The vehicle weighs less than 20 tons and is being developed as a 6 × 6 wheel and rubber track version .

history

Development began in 1996. The first SEP rubber track demonstrator was handed over to the Swedish Forsvarets Materielverk (FMV) in November 2000, and since then up to 2003 more than 2000 kilometers of test drives have been completed.

The Forsvarets Materielverk (FMV) commissioned Hägglunds to develop the wheel version of the SEP in November 2001; the prototype was delivered in 2003. This year - after a review - the green light was given for the development of a second chain prototype, which was delivered in November 2005.

The final contract was signed in July 2006 . It is agreed to build two more wheeled vehicles and two more tracked vehicles . The Splitterskyddad Enhets platform will then be delivered to the Swedish armed forces in 2014 . The system was also given good chances on the export market.

SEP chain version in Satory 2006

On February 4, 2008, the Swedish magazine NyTeknik announced the discontinuation of the project. It is justified by the Swedish armed forces and BAE Systems Hägglunds with the lack of international development partners, Sweden's low military budget, the fact that it is too late to be deployed and the unexpectedly low export prospects.

BAE Systems Hägglunds has been promoting the SEP program in the bicycle version independently and is looking for potential buyers. Hägglunds himself sees the United States Marine Corps' Marine Personnel Carrier program, which is in the demonstration phase, as a possible target for their system.

technology

Diesel-electric drive

Two diesel engines on the left and right sides of the vehicle, each with an integrated, permanently excited (PM) flywheel generator, supply the electrical systems with power. The electric traction motors are fed from two 600 V DC busbars via converters in the vehicle chassis. If corresponding high-performance batteries with their associated power electronics are integrated, a purely electric drive (Silent Move) is possible. The battery-supported, conventional 24 V on-board network is supplied from the high voltage via DC / DC converters.

A number of advantages are ascribed to the system:

The top speed of the wheel version is expected to be 100 km / h, that of the chain version with rubber tracks from the Canadian company Soucy should be 85 km / h. In the wheel version, the two front and the two rear wheels are controllable. The wheels are 405/70 R24 tires. The engines of the prototypes are and were: 2 × 2.3-liter 5-cylinder from Volkswagen and 3.2-liter 6-cylinder diesel engine Steyr M16 with 130 kW (177 hp).

cockpit

As with the FCS MGV , the two soldiers sit in front of a row of flat screens. With the help of externally mounted cameras, these replace conventional corner mirrors. Of course, other information can also be displayed on the screens, such as technical data of the vehicle, tactical maps, images, videos or the field of vision of unmanned vehicles . This system, called VETEC , is being developed by Hägglunds and Diehl .

protection

The modular ceramic armor is manufactured by Ingenieurbüro Deisenroth (IBD) and protects, among other things, against the explosion of 7 kg of TNT under the chain. Further protection will be implemented in the future by means of distance-active protective measures , as the vehicle weighs less than 20 tons and the standard version can only withstand 14.5 × 114 mm projectiles. However, the armor plating can increased armor to 30 mm APFSDS - projectiles to be increased.

mission

The modular design allows the Splitterskyddad Enhets platform to be used in 24 different roles, including:

The mission- or role-specific modules can be mounted on the tracked or wheeled vehicle in a short time, similar to changing containers on a truck .
