Life

Kurt Pittner was born in Vienna on March 5, 1943. In 1957, at the age of 14, he came into contact with dumbbells for the first time through a schoolmate. He trained with the Meidlinger AK, initially sporadically, then after two years regularly. In 1960 he increased his training schedule again.

In 1962 Kurt Pittner became national champion for the first time. Then he did his military service. However, he managed to be assigned to the armed forces' sports train . The local, more intensive training enabled Pittner to finish third in the 1963 state championship. From 1964 onwards another 15 Austrian titles followed.

International career

In 1963 he was in the Danube Cup national dress for the first time. In 1965 the first participation in the European Championship followed and in 1966 the first participation in the World Cup. Nevertheless, Pittner was not yet a professional athlete at that time, he worked part-time in a gas works as a house electrician, after having successfully completed his apprenticeship as an electrical mechanic at the Kapsch company and in the meantime also working as a telecommunications fitter at the post office. He later became a broadcast technician for ORF . However, through the intervention of the later Austrian Foreign Minister Erwin Lanc, he had the opportunity to train while on duty.

At the EM in 1968 in Leningrad, he qualified for the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico. Nevertheless, the ÖOC initially did not want to take Pittner into the team until the then ÖGV secretary Gottfried Schödl intervened successfully. Kurt Pittner reached a 10th place in the bantamweight division in Mexico City .

At the 1971 World Cup in Lima (Peru) , Pittner was able to secure two bronze medals. In 1972 Kurt Pittner achieved fifth place in Munich, which is the best result of an Austrian weightlifter at the Olympic Games since the Second World War. A year later a World Cup bronze medal followed. Although he continued to win national titles and set some records, he could not achieve a gold medal, neither in bantamweight, nor in flyweight . Due to the general conditions at the 1976 Olympic Games , Kurt Pittner only made three unsuccessful attempts to tear. He then ended his international career. He remained undefeated nationally. In 1982 he took part in his last competition.

After the sporting career

After the end of his career, Pittner successfully completed the HTL evening school.

Kurt Pittner rarely speaks about his career, and in the few cases also mentions the people who have promoted him. He sees his success based on the fact that he trained more diligently than others, led an absolutely sporty way of life and largely subordinated his professional and private life to his sporting goals.

Kurt Pittner is married and has one son. His interests include home and garden, hiking, mountaineering and cycling.
