Kurt Wais

Kurt Wais (born January 9, 1907 in Stuttgart , † September 13, 1995 ) was a German Romance scholar , Germanist and comparativeist .

life and work

Wais did his doctorate in Tübingen with Gerhard Rohlfs on Henrik Ibsen and the problem of the past in the context of contemporary intellectual history (Stuttgart 1931) and qualified as a professor in comparative literature and Romance philology on the anti-philosophical worldview of the French Sturm und Drang 1760–1789 (Berlin 1934). Wais was a member of the Kampfbund for German Culture and later a " NSDAP party candidate". In 1936/37 he took the chair for Romance Philology at the University of Halle . From 1939 to 1942 he was associate professor in Tübingen and from 1942 to 1945 full professor in Strasbourg . From 1946 to 1952 he was a lecturer in Tübingen, Stuttgart and Bamberg. From 1952 to 1954 he was visiting professor in Tübingen. From 1954 he was an associate professor there, first for comparative literature, from 1958 also for Romance philology. From 1961 to 1975 he was a full professor of Romance philology and comparative literature at the University of Tübingen .
