Scientific name

( Koelz , 1924)

The short-nosed whitefish ( Coregonus reighardi ) is an extremely rare or already extinct freshwater fish from the salmon fish family (Salmonidae). It was named scientifically after the American ichthyologist Jacob Reighard .

description

It reaches a maximum length of 36 cm and a maximum weight of 540 g. It differs from other whitefish mainly in its thicker body (almost round in cross-section), the shorter head (which gave this species its name) and the small eyes. Like many other species of vendace, the short-nosed vendace has hardly been researched. Little is known about its breeding behavior and life cycle, except that it spawns on the lake floor in spring. The oldest specimen caught was 8 years old. The diet consists of crustaceans, molluscs and zooplankton.

Occurrence

This species is native to the Nearctic region and was previously found in Lake Huron , Lake Michigan, and Lake Ontario in Canada and the United States . The last known population was restricted to George Bay in Lake Huron in Canada.

Danger

It is currently still listed as "critically endangered" by the IUCN . The United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the Ministry of Natural Resources of Ontario , however, consider this species as extinct because since 1985 no copy could be detected. This species was present in Lake Ontario until 1964, was last seen in Lake Michigan in 1974 and in 1985 in George Bay. The parasitism of the invasive sea lamprey ( Petromyzon marinus ) combined with commercial overfishing has contributed to the dramatic collapse of populations and their possible extinction.
