The manga consisted of 22 chapters that appeared in Bessatsu Young Magazine from 2002 to 2003 . The magazine is published by Kodansha and is aimed primarily at an older male audience.

The plot focuses primarily on the school life of class 5-2 (2nd class of the 5th year, so "5b") and the primary school student Ryōta Satō. In doing so, she particularly goes into the relationships and attitudes of the students and shows their naive but understandable behavior.

The manga was adapted in 2006 as an original video animation (OVA) with a length of 4 episodes and a special. Another adaptation was made in 2008 by the studio Xebec in the form of a 13-part anime - television series . Building on the television series, other media such as radio plays and music CDs were released.

action

Primary school student Ryōta Satō and his classmate Chika Koizumi have been friends since they were young and have promised each other through a yubikiri ( 指 切 り ) to get married. In the fifth grade and with the onset of the difficult phase of puberty , the familiar misunderstandings and overreactions of students occur. Ryōta and his classmates repeatedly get into awkward situations in which they don't really know how to behave and what others think of them.

Characters

Ryōta Satō ( 佐藤 リ ョ ー タ , Satō Ryōta )

Ryōta is the protagonist of the series and the childhood friend of Chika, who fell in love with her from the start. At school, Kōji and Tsubasa are some of his best friends, and he often duels with Kōji to find out which of the two is better. Although he is not portrayed as particularly intelligent and regularly falls for traps set by his classmates, he has a good heart and tries to help others as best he can. However, he always gets into ambiguous situations, which often ends in blows from Chika or Yūki.

Chika Koizumi ( 小泉 チ カ , Koizumi Chika )

In the relationships between her and Ryōta, she often takes the leading role. Although she feels for Ryōta, he does not seem to show any interest in girls. So she always tries to overlook his mistakes, whereby she cannot help annoying him.

Yūki Asano ( 浅 野 ユ ウ キ , Asano Yūki )

She is a classmate of Ryōta and has a bright, honest and active personality. She keeps worrying about the size of her breasts and despite her strong sense of responsibility, she can keep no secret. She is secretly in love with Kōji and keeps giving him home-made “delicacies” - even though, to Kōji's chagrin, she is a terrible cook.

Kazumi Aihara ( 相 原 カ ズ ミ , Aihara Kazumi )

She is a very quiet, mysterious and somehow sadistic classmate. She often makes notes in her journal about all sorts of things that seem to interest her. In doing so, she usually stays out of the activities of her classmates. A specialty of her is that none of the students has ever seen her laugh and no one manages to make her laugh either.

Natsumi Hirakawa ( 平川 ナ ツ ミ , Hirakawa Natsumi )

She is a sporty and boyish girl who uses the male personal pronoun boku and also wears boys' clothes. Natsumi has an innocent nature and her friends often have to prevent her from undressing in front of the boys. Although she is generally calm in character, she is afraid of the dark.

Conception

The series deliberately alludes to the typical embarrassments of childhood and uses them to involuntarily create strange situations, which are, however, very close to the real model of reality. The students often try to portray themselves as older and more experienced than they actually are, which is underlined by deliberately older, distinctive facial features. This stylistic device can also be found in the Minami-ke manga series drawn by Koharu Sakuraba since 2004 .
