Chinzei Bugyō

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chinzei Bugyō ( Japanese 鎮西 奉行 , dt. "Commissioner for the pacified West") was the name of a post created in 1186 to supervise the defense of Kyūshūs ( Chinzei ). During this time it was the main task of the Bugyō to find and eliminate those who had supported Minamoto no Yoshitsune and not his brother Yoritomo , as a candidate for the post of Shogun . Less than a century later, Chinzei was the first line of defense during the Mongol invasions of Japan . Later it was just one of many similar posts set up across Japan. In the course of time, the position of the Bugyō was called Chinzei Shugo ( 鎮西 守護 ), from 1293 or 1297 as Chinzei Tandai ( 鎮西 探 題 ) and from 1336 as Kyūshū Tandai ( 九州 探 題 ).

The first Chinzei Bugyō was Amano Tōkage ( 天野 遠景 ), who was shortly followed by Nakawara Nobufusa . Nobufusa was sent to put down the resistance in Kyūshū. He established his seat in Dazaifu , where he received all the orders of the Shogun for Kyushu. Since the local feudal lords did not cooperate with the police, the Kyūshū Tandai had to act as an intermediary between Kyūshū and the capital in Kamakura .
