Kyknos (son of Sthenelos)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kyknos ( ancient Greek Κύκνος , Latin mostly Cycnus , "swan"; in Hyginus Cygnus ), is the son of Sthenelos in Greek mythology .

Cyknos was king of the Ligurians and a relative, friend or, in later versions of the myth, also a lover of Phaethon . When Phaethon falls dead from heaven into the river Eridanus , Cyknos rushes over and mourns for him. From Apollo he is then transformed into a swan out of pity.
