Kyzikos (mythology)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kyzikos ( Greek  Κύζικος ) is in the Argonauts legend of Greek mythology the young king of the Dolions on the Propontis .

He is the son of Aineus and Ainete , the daughter of Eusoros , or Eusoros himself, and married to Kleite , the daughter of Merops . Since they had only recently married, the marriage is still childless. However, according to another version, he leaves behind sons. Also Larisa , daughter of Piasos , named as his bride.

Kyzikos is the founder and king of the city of Kyzikos named after him . Kyzikos welcomes the Argonauts in his city on their way to Colchis and provides them with ample supplies for their onward journey. When the Argonauts are driven back ignorantly to the coast of the Dolionen by adverse winds in the dark of night, a fight breaks out between Dolionen and Argonauts, as both sides do not recognize each other and regard each other as hostile strangers. In the course of this fight, Kyzikos is accidentally killed by Jason (or Heracles ), who does not recognize his friend in the blackness of the night. When the Argonauts realized their mistake the next day, they solemnly buried him.
