Léon Couturier
Léon Antoine Lucien Couturier (born December 29, 1842 in Mâcon , Saône-et-Loire department , † December 21, 1935 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was a French painter specializing in marine painting and book illustrator.
Live and act
Couturier was the son of the merchant Louis Marie Couturier and his wife Jeanne Maris Fontanelle. After attending school in his hometown, Couturier attended the École des Beaux-Arts (EBA) in Lyon from 1860 .
In the spring of 1864, Couturier went to Paris and became a student of Alexandre Cabanel in his studio. During the siege of Paris in 1870 (→ Franco-German War ), he helped defend the city.
Léon Couturier died eight days before his 93rd birthday on December 21, 1935 in Neuilly-sur Seine, where he found his final resting place.
reception
Couturier's experiences and experiences from the war were later also reflected in his pictures. On a long study trip to and through North Africa , he collected impressions which later also found their way into his artistic work. From 1880 onwards, Couturier devoted himself almost exclusively to marine painting and this led to his appointment as Peintre Officiel de la Marine in 1890 .
