Lökestein

The Lökestein is a natural monument and an old boundary stone in the district of Buchholz (Westerwald) on the edge of the Mußer Heide about 200 m north of the road 274 between Eudenbach and Buchholz on the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate . It is registered under the number "ND-7138-373" in the list of natural monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

history

The striking appearance of the Lökestein has drawn people from all over the area for centuries. Different names and spellings testify to it, such as B. Läutestein, Leutestein, Lüggestein, Lüddenstein, Lückstein or Löckstein. According to an old legend, the stone turns several times in a circle when a favorable wind carries the sound of the midday bell from Windhagen over the Mußer Heide .

Originally a quartzite rock as high as a house, it was replaced in the 19th century a. a. smashed into paving stones for road construction. Today it is about 2 m high and consists of several smaller rocks. The stone is brown to yellow at the break points, which indicates the weathering of iron-containing minerals. In 1982, when a 3.8 hectare nature reserve was designated in the Buchholzer Moor, it was given its current official name. In 2007 this nature reserve was expanded to a size of 67 hectares and since then has been called Buchholzer Moor with Lökestein and Sauerwieser Heide . A circular path of approx. 1.6 km in length leads through the local heathland and over a branch path to the Lökestein.

It has not been clearly established whether Liwenstein, mentioned in a description of the tenth limit in Oberpleis in AD 948 , is the Lökestein. Documented to the Lökestein since the 17th century as a landmark between the old Electoral Cologne parish Asbach and to the former Duchy of Berg belonging to the parish Oberpleis Honschaft Oberhau or Eudenbach. Today's border between the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Königswinter and the Rhineland-Palatinate municipality of Buchholz (Westerwald) runs a few meters west of the Lökstein.
