Lützelau ( Old High German for small island ) is the smaller of the two Lake Zurich islands Ufenau and Lützelau. It is around 300 meters long and around 150 meters wide at the widest point. The area is 3.38 hectares. It is located in the Freienbach area in the Höfe district of the canton of Schwyz , near the village of Pfäffikon SZ .

history

The island was created by the Linth glacier around 10,000 years ago . The island is mentioned in documents in 741 and 744 in connection with a later abandoned women's monastery. In 744 the island was sold to the St. Gallen monastery . In the late Middle Ages the island came into the possession of the Counts of Rapperswil. Today the island belongs to the city of Rapperswil-Jona. During an emergency excavation in 1964, the remains of the women's monastery and grave sites were found.

Nature reserve

The island itself and its riparian zones and reed belt are under conservation . From May to the end of September you can camp on the island within a given framework. There is a cold water sink at the island house. A hot water shower can also be used for a fee. The island is maintained by an island warden who works on behalf of the Rapperswil-Jona tourist office. There is also an island taxi on the water that takes guests from Rapperswil SG to Lützelau and back with the so-called Lütz-Shuttle between May and the end of September .
