The L'Orós - Dam (also Orós dam Portuguese Açude Orós or Açude Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira is) the dam of Açude-Oros dam in the northeastern Brazilian state of Ceará .

Oros Dam

The Oros Dam is located about 270 km south of the state capital Fortaleza near Orós in the Centro-Sul Cearense region. According to various sources, its height is specified as 35 or 54 m and, accordingly, the crown length as 620 to 670 m. The dam, with a volume of 50,800 m³, was completed in 1962. Since then it has been used to regulate the water on the Rio Jaguaribe and to generate electricity from hydropower . The Castanhão dam has been located a little downstream since 2003.

Dam accident

Before the completion of the Orós Dam and even during construction - on March 25 or 28, 1960 (but probably on March 25) - the dam broke, causing a tidal wave that killed around 1,000 people. The disaster happened during floods as a result of unexpectedly heavy rainfall. The dam was flooded and washed away. However, the failure of the structure could be predicted a few days in advance, and therefore the population could be warned that 100,000 people were saved.

Açude-Orós reservoir

According to various sources, the storage capacity of the Açude-Orós reservoir comprises 1.9 billion to 2.1 billion m³ of water. The surface is 350 km².
