LAPAN-TUBSAT was a cooperation between the Indonesian space agency LAPAN and the space equipment and systems department of the Institute for Aerospace at the TU Berlin . LAPAN provided six guest scientists and paid one million euros to the TU Berlin for the development and construction of the satellite. It was designed and built within a year and a half.
The satellite's technology was a further development of the DLR-TUBSAT and MAROC-TUBSAT satellites and also served as the basis for the planned SVALBIRD satellite.
The satellite successfully launched as a piggyback payload with an Indian PSLV rocket on January 10, 2007 at 3:53 UTC into a 640 km high solar synchronous orbit. The main payload was the Indian Cartosat-2 and the SRE experiment. After that, all systems worked within their parameters.
The satellite was used for interactive earth observation, especially disaster monitoring and impact assessment, and for communication experiments with decentralized ground stations, for example volcano measuring stations. It was also used by LAPAN to train its engineers in satellite design and operation. The whole program was on the one hand a technology transfer program from the TU Berlin to LAPAN and on the other hand it served the space verification of new technologies like CMOS star sensors .
