Dmitri Trofimowitsch Shepilov
Dmitri Shepilov ( Russian Дмитрий Трофимович Шепилов ; born October 23 . Jul / 5. November 1905 greg. In Ashkhabad , Russian empire , today Turkmenistan , † 18 August 1995 in Moscow ) was a Soviet politician and Foreign Minister of the USSR from 1956 to 1957.
Life
Shepilov became a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU on July 12, 1955 and a candidate for the Politburo on February 27, 1956 . On June 1, 1956, he succeeded Molotov as Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union. He was considered a close confidante of Khrushchev and is said to have contributed to the policy of opening up a new direction towards the West.
On July 29, 1957, Shepilov was expelled from the Politburo along with Molotov , Kaganowitsch and Malenkov after an attempted coup against Khrushchev . His successor as foreign minister was his previous deputy Gromyko .
