The LEAG T 3 diesel multiple unit was built by Waggonbau Dessau in 1938 and delivered to the Lausitzer Eisenbahn-Aktien-Gesellschaft (LEAG). Like the two railcars LEAG T 1 and T 2, it came from the LEAG T 1 – T 3 series .

History and commitment

LEAG T 3

The vehicle was inspected brand new by Lausitzer Eisenbahn-Aktien-Gesellschaft (LEAG) in 1938 .

DR 835

After the Lausitzer Eisenbahn-Aktien-Gesellschaft became part of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1939 , the railcar was briefly named 835. However, the Reichsbahn found it too expensive to maintain the vehicle, so they offered it for sale.

RAG T 2 / VT 02 / VT 12

The Regentalbahn AG (RAG) thus acquired an almost new vehicle in 1941 and referred to it first as the T 2 , later as the VT 02 . The railcar was used on the Gotteszell – Blaibach line , primarily between Viechtach and Blaibach . In times of low traffic he drove the entire route. At times he was in use on the Deggendorf – Metten local railway . On the main route, the smaller car was preferred for other services such as mail delivery.

The car was first converted in 1958. The drive system was converted from two motors to one motor. The car lost the roof radiator, the front sides were given two windows without a transition door. From 1974 the railcar was used as a towing car after adaptation measures and was preferably used on the Deggendorf – Metten local railway. Features were large lane clearers and the end faces with headlights and separate tail lights . In 1978 the railcar was renamed VT 12 . In 1983 the use of the Regentalbahn ended.

MKB VT 01

In 1987, after restoration and repainting, the railcar was sold to the Mindener Kreisbahnen in a wine-red color scheme . The track clearers remained. The vehicle was intended for the operation of a visitor mine in Kleinenbremen and was given the number VT 01 .

MEM T 2

Since 2014 it has been operated by the Minden Museum Railway as T 2 and has the NVR number 95 80 0301 018-9 D-MEM .

Constructive features

With a wheelbase of seven meters and a length of 13.6 meters over buffers , the railcar was one of the larger of the railcars produced in Dessau . During his time with the Deutsche Reichsbahn it was referred to as a two-axle heavy-duty diesel multiple unit. But that has nothing to do with the type of construction, it belonged to the vehicles of the lightweight construction , but the Deutsche Reichsbahn had free numbers for the vehicles of the LEAG only in this vehicle category.

It was designed for the transport of loads in the vestibules, these had external doors with a clear width of 750 mm, which could be enlarged to 1000 mm using additional fold-out wall parts. The rear entry area in the direction of travel was used as an additional luggage and load space during normal operation. The driver's desk that was not in use could be closed with a roller shutter.

Until 1958, the railcar had a roof cooler and a front section divided by a transition door. During the renovation work, the heating system of the car was changed, the previously used coke oven was replaced by hot water heating. During the adaptation measures for use as a tow car, the number of seats was reduced in 1974 in order to create more space for luggage and express goods. The driver's cab was given a red driver's desk with modern instruments and a simple, sprung motorcycle seat.

Two engines from Deutsche Werke in Kiel and two Mylius gearboxes were installed on delivery . In 1974 these were replaced by an engine from Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz and an LRG 125 gearbox from Voith .
