history

On March 25, 1874, the "Catholic Press Association" of the diocese of St. Pölten in Krems was founded. The purpose of the association was “to contribute in a Christian spirit to the information and education of the population and to the promotion of the common good” under the principles: “Journalism in the service of the people, small and large, in the service of the country and its development, journalism with conviction and Christianity Weltanschauung ". The founders saw themselves as the antithesis of the liberal Viennese press at the time, which was felt to be dominated by anti-church free-thinkers.

The first newspaper, the “Preßvereinsbote”, was published in 1876 with a circulation of 7,000 and in 1886 the company moved to St. Pölten, where it is still based despite several inner-city relocations. In the same year the press club messenger in “St. Pöltner Bote "renamed, two years later to" St. Pöltner Zeitung ”. In 1915, as a technical innovation, the first newspaper rotary press went into operation. After the " Anschluss of Austria " the premises were occupied by the SA and the St. Pöltner Zeitung "incorporated into the National Socialist train of thought in the sense of the new era ...".

After the Second World War , the re-established press association founded the Lower Austrian Newspaper Society in St. Pölten, and the publishing house was not returned until the mid-1950s. In 1970 the Niederösterreichische Pressehaus Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft mbH was founded, which was an amalgamation of the Preßvereinsdruckerei, the Lower Austrian newspaper company and the Hippolyt bookstore . Offset printing was introduced in the same year .

In 1985/1986 the bookstore in Horn, the express printing and the Tabü paperback shop were opened in downtown St. Pölten. A year later the Faber publishing house was taken over. In 1990, the two weekly newspaper rings, NÖ Nachrichten and Die Neue, merged to form Neue NÖN , which has been published as NÖN - NÖ NACHRICHTEN with 28 regional editions since 1995 .

In addition to the NÖN - NÖ NACHRICHTEN , around 300 other newspapers and magazines are printed. In addition, the Pressehaus operated a book publisher, Residenz Verlag , from which the Pressehaus separated again in 2015.
