The La Salette pilgrimage chapel is located in Engerazhofen, a suburb of Leutkirch in the Allgäu . The chapel was built in 1864 and is an ecclesiastically recognized place of pilgrimage and church of the small community of missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette .

history

The origin of this Marian veneration lies in France . On September 19, 1846 at 3 p.m., the Virgin Mary appeared to the two shepherd children Melanie Calvat (15 years) and Maximin Giraud (11 years) in clear weather on a nearby mountain near La Salette-Fallavaux . The "beautiful lady", as she was called by the children, is said to have cried with grief. She subsequently conveyed messages to the world.

In 1857 the pastor of Engeratzhofen, Josef Steigmaier, suffered a serious illness. He vowed to build a chapel for St. Mary when he should recover. After healing, he kept his promise and construction began in 1864. The pilgrimage chapel is located on a small hill called Fuchsberg and is also a popular place to get married. On September 19, 1866, the chapel was consecrated in honor of missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette.

Since 2000, the Engerazhofen Passion Play , the local parish of St. Johann Baptist, has been taking place at the chapel at irregular intervals . The big annual chapel festival takes place on the Sunday after September 19th, the day La Salette is published. On 20 September 2009, the bishop has Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart , Gebhard Fürst a new branch community of the Missionaries of La Salette built in Engerazhofen. It consists of three Salettinians from Poland.
