La Bruja

La Bruja ( Spanish for The Witch ) is an old Mexican song that originated in the state of Veracruz and is very popular there. In order to keep the tradition alive in future generations, child-friendly film versions of the song are being written.

Several stories and legends of ghosts, demons and witches are circulating in some rural areas of Mexico. One of these stories is that of “La Bruja” and perhaps comparable to that of Dracula in Romania . “La Bruja” is also an eerie creature that sucks the blood out of its victims. The song tells a story of seduction and magic and is one of the most popular melodies of the traditional dance of Veracruz, in which the dancers wear a candle or a glass on their heads.

“La Bruja” was one of the favorite songs of the Mexican painter Diego Rivera , the two-time husband of the painter Frida Kahlo , and was also included in the film Frida , in which Salma Hayek also sings this song in the role of Frida Kahlo. A music video with original recordings by Kahlo and Rivera for the song was also released in connection with the film.
