La Fortuna (full name: La Fortuna de San Carlos) is a city in the canton of San Carlos in the Alajuela province of the Central American state of Costa Rica . “La Fortuna” is Spanish for “happiness”.
geography
La Fortuna is located six kilometers east of the foot of the Arenal volcano and about 350 meters above sea level.
history
In 1850 the first expeditions reached the region around the place. In 1915 the first settlement in the region comes into being with the name “La Palma”. In 1930 La Fortuna was founded under the name "Caserío El Burío". In 1948 the place was renamed to today's name La Fortuna.
For a long time, the nearby Arenal was not considered a volcano due to its inactivity. After the eruption of the volcano on July 29, 1968, the region attracted numerous tourists. Since then, La Fortuna has been the most important starting point for excursions to the Arenal. Although the volcano has not given any of its glowing interior since 2010, the place and the region continue to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica.
Attractions
In addition to the nearby Volcán Arenal National Park , the site offers numerous natural thermal springs that are heated by hot lava. About five kilometers outside of the village there is a waterfall that plunges 70 meters down a steep gorge. The hiking trail to Cerro Chato , an inactive volcano in the immediate vicinity of the Arenal, begins near the waterfall . The Cerro Chato with its crater lake is about 1100 meters high.
