La Grande is a small town in Union County , Oregon , United States . The city is the county council of Union County. The place used to be called Brownsville. The current name can be traced back to Charles Dause , who often described the beauty of the area with the term La Grande. In 2014 the city had around 13,000 inhabitants.

The Oregon Trail went through La Grande. The first settler was Benjamin Brown in 1861.
