La Molina is a hamlet belonging to the Parroquia Prado with 24 inhabitants (as of 2014) in the extreme southwest of the municipality ( consejo ) Cabrales in the autonomous region of Asturias in northern Spain .
location
La Molina is located on the upper reaches of the Río Casaño at an altitude of approx. 580 m above sea level . It is about eight kilometers (driving distance) to the east to Carreña , the main town in the municipality.
economy
Until the middle of the 20th century, the inhabitants of La Molina lived mainly as a self-sufficient source of income from their fields and gardens, as well as from raising cattle. Today tourism plays a not insignificant role in the economic life of the place. The most important and nationally known product is Cabrales , a blue mold cheese made from cow , sheep and goat milk .
Attractions
- The surrounding landscape of La Molina is of exceptional beauty and can be explored on hikes.
- A medieval bridge ( Puente Pompedro ) about 500 meters south of the village spans a narrow gorge of the Río Casaño.
