View of La Nouvelle

La Nouvelle is a village in the municipality of La Possession in Reunion . La Nouvelle is the main town of the Cirque de Mafate and cannot be reached by road. Like all other îlets (villages in the Cirques) , the place, which lies at an altitude of approx. 1400 m and belongs to the Bas Mafate (the upper Mafate), can only be reached on foot via a few hiking trails. The easiest way to get there is via the Col des Bœufs Pass La Nouvelle. A forest road leads to this through the Cirque de Salazie , from where it is about 2 hours on foot to La Nouvelle. From the south, La Nouvelle can be reached via the Col du Taïbit Pass from Cilaos via the village of Marla , but this requires a strenuous hike lasting several hours. The GR long-distance hiking network in the Cirque de Mafate is very well developed and well signposted. The village is supplied by helicopters that fly to La Nouvelle several times a day.

La Nouvelle, like all other villages in the Cirque de Mafate, was probably founded during the marronage in the 18th century. Until slavery was banned in Réunion in 1848, many slaves fled violence, oppression and poverty to the island's interior, which was difficult to access. White settlers followed later, who had lost their fertile farmland due to the demographic change on the island and unsolved inheritance disputes as a result of the abolition of slavery. In the middle of the 20th century, the local administration started for the first time to improve the living conditions of the people in the Cirque de Mafate. Since the 1980s, investing in tourism has been intended to counter the brain drain of young people from the cirque. Today around 150-200 people live in La Nouvelle all year round, most of whom live from tourism and agriculture. There is also a church and an elementary school.
