La Scarzuola, main building of the ideal city

La Scarzuola is a building complex in Montegiove (district of Montegabbione ), which was created through the conversion and expansion of a medieval Franciscan monastery Convento de la Scarzuola .

history

La Scarzuola is the work of the Milanese architect Tomaso Buzzi (1900–1981), who wanted to create a reduced ideal city in the spirit of the Renaissance . Construction continues by Buzzi's nephew Marco Solari.

Buzzi, a highly educated, busy and wealthy architect of the Italian aristocracy and the big bourgeoisie got more and more distance from the mainstream of architectural development at an advanced age and devoted himself to his historical, bibliophile and esoteric inclinations. After a long search, he acquired the Franciscan monastery founded in 1218 in 1956, restored the church and monastery and housed his archive, library and art collection in this area.

The adjacent ideal city built by him from tuff consists of seven nested buildings and is based on Francesco Colonna's Hypnerotomachia Poliphili from 1499, an enigmatic novel that already included the Boboli Gardens in Florence and the "Parco dei Mostri" - the park of the monsters - inspired in Bomarzo .

There are seven theaters dedicated to bees, water, the human body, Apollo, Diana and loneliness, among others. The labyrinthine structure, a "folly" in the sense of garden art and a piece of esoteric outsider architecture is crowned by a small-format acropolis .

Marco Solari continues to build the Cittá Ideale, based on sketches by Tomaso Buzzi. The building can be viewed by appointment.
