Labeobarbus is a genus of medium-sized to large African carp fish . The generic name is made up of Labeo and Barbus and refers to the similarity of Labeobarbus with the other two species of carp.

features

Labeobarbus species are 11 cm to one meter long and, like the Labeo and Barbus species, have an elongated body that is only slightly flattened at the side. Their scales are structured by parallel grooves. The dorsal fin is supported by 8 to 11, usually only 9 or 10, branched fin rays. The gill rakes are numerous and well developed. The lips are clearly defined, they often have a central lobe and one or two pairs of barbels .

Labeobarbus species have one hexaploid chromosome set, which means they have six sets of chromosomes.

species

Fishbase are 47 labeobarbus of styles. In a revision of the carp fish subfamily Cyprininae published in February 2015, the hexaploid, large African barbels from the genus Barbus were also placed in the genus Labeobarbus . Beginning in 2016 the species was Varicorhinus with labeobarbus synonymised . Thus the genus Labeobarbus now includes over 125 species.
