Labeobarbus altianalis ( Syn .: Barbus altianalis ), English Ripon Barbel, called Enzuguli in Uganda, Inkwekwe in Rwanda and Fwani in Kenya, is a large species of African barbel.

description

Labeobarbus altianalis has the following fin formula : dorsal 9–11, anal 5–6. The front barbels can reach mid-eye level, but are usually very short. The back barbels are longer. The lips are very pronounced. Specimens up to 18 kilograms and around 110 centimeters in length have been caught in the East African lakes.

distribution and habitat

Labeobarbus altianalis is native to East Africa. It occurs in Kenya , Tanzania , Rwanda , Burundi , Uganda and Congo . The fish species is found in Lake Kiwu , the Ruzizi River to the river delta, Akagera below the Rusumo Falls. The fish species can also be found in Eduardsee , Victoria and Kyogasee .

Way of life

Labeobarbus altianalis prefers waters with a sand or gravel bottom. Young fish are mostly found in rivers, while adults live in both rivers and lakes. In lakes, mainly mollusks serve as the basis of nutrition, while insect larvae play a major role in the diet of Labeobarbus altianalis in deep waters . The animals also eat vegetable food, crustaceans and small fish. Plant remains mainly from young fish. Barbus altianalis is oviparous .

Use

Labeobarbus altianalis is edible and sport fish, especially in the region around the Kagera River.

Hazardous situation

Labeobarbus altianalis is currently not one of the threatened fish species in Africa due to its wide distribution area and its omnivorous eating habits. Local populations can, however, be briefly affected by erosion after clear-cutting in the surrounding tropical rainforests and the associated clouding of the waters. Waters heavily enriched with sediments offer hardly any growth basis for underwater plants and thus little chance of survival for the young fish. Labeobarbus altianalis is one of the slow-growing fish species and therefore needs a relatively long time to become sexually mature. Increasing uncontrolled overfishing on the Kagera River could also become a threat.
