history

Chapel near the lake

A chapel from 1070 stands on its bank. There is a sarcophagus next to the chapel. In the Celtic times, the place was probably a religious site. A hermitage was founded there in the 11th century . In 1508 a chapel called Chapelle de la Mer (Sea Chapel ) was built and it became a place of pilgrimage. In 1865, after the old chapel was destroyed, a new pilgrimage chapel was built on its crypt .

Legend

The following legend is reported about Lac de la Maix: On a pilgrimage day, an unknown musician came and made the villagers dance after playing his violin. They danced with so much enthusiasm that they did not hear the bell that called for mass. It was conjectured that the stranger was the devil in person. The punishment was not long in coming, the earth opened up under the dancers who drowned in the lake that rose up from the earth. The villagers were condemned to continue dancing there until the Last Judgment. Today it is said that on some evenings you can still hear the violinist ...
