The Lakhta Center ( Russian Лахта Центр , transcribed Lachta Zentr, translated Lachta Center ) is a multi-purpose building complex in the St. Petersburg district of Lachta, directly on the northern bank of the Gulf of Finland . In addition to its main function as the headquarters of Gazprom , a significant part of the building and the surrounding area is intended for public and leisure infrastructure. At 462 m, the Lakhta Center skyscraper has been the tallest building in Europe since January 2018 .

Building history

Gazprom's construction plans in Lachta became known in early 2012 after the construction of the previously planned Okhta Center (initially Gazprom City ) , closer to Saint Petersburg's historic city center, was abandoned in 2010. The building permit was granted in August 2012 and development work began in October 2012.

The work on the foundation and the basement floors was completed in 2015. When concreting the tower foundation, a new world record of 19,624 m³ was achieved for the largest uninterrupted concreting, which was included in the Guinness Book of Records. In August 2015, the construction of the above-ground floors of the main and atrium building began. Upon reaching the 37th floor in July 2016, the Lakhta Center replaced the 145.5 m high Leader Tower, completed in 2013, as the tallest building in Saint Petersburg; on May 10, 2017, the core of the building with the 78th floor reached a height of 327.6 meters and thus surpassed the television tower as the tallest building in Saint Petersburg. In October 2017, with a height of 374 meters, Federazija Vostok in Moscow was replaced as the tallest building in Europe, and in January 2018 the planned height of 462 meters was reached.

In June 2018, the building was provisionally commissioned, and in October 2018, full approval for commissioning was granted by the State Building Supervision and Inspection Service of Saint Petersburg. In December 2018, the Lakhta Center was certified according to LEED Platinum .

The date of opening of the complex will be determined after the completion of the decoration and embellishment work. The beautification of the embankment should be completed by the end of 2020.

In 2020 the Lachta Center received the “Award of Excellence” from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in five categories .

Function of the multipurpose site

The core of the building is intended to serve as a modern business center with many public functions and to relieve the city. The building contains offices, a conference center and sports facilities. There is also a children's center for science and education (Wissenschaftswelt) on an area of 14,000 square meters. The entire area of the multi-purpose site also houses a health center, a film center and a spherical planetarium. After completion of the building, there will be a panorama restaurant at a height of 315 m. On the top floor (370 m) there will be a viewing terrace with a 360-degree view. Another type of use is an amphitheater for watching water shows. It will be placed on the bank next to the multipurpose area and will accommodate up to 2000 people.

The 100,000 square meter outer facade consists of aluminum, steel and cold-bent glass.

Another is added to the four objects in the complex (tower, multi-purpose building, arch, stylobate ).

The building complex consists of two individual buildings that are connected by an inner courtyard. The total area of the complex is 570,000 m².
