Lacydes spectabilis is a butterfly ( moth ) from the cutworm - subfamily of the tiger moth (Arctiinae).

The moths have a wingspan of 32 to 40 millimeters. The basic color of the wings is silky white. On the upper side of the forewing there is a dense, light brownish pattern of spots, which is darker in the females than in the males. The upper side of the hind wing shows in the males a narrow brownish band of spots near the outer edge . In the females, the basal and disk regions are also darkened. The antennae of the males are double-combed, those of the females are thread-like. The thorax in both sexes is furry hairy.
Similar species
In the sister species Lacydes incurvata Ebert , 1973, the brownish spots on the upper side of the forewing are paler.
Distribution and occurrence
The distribution area of Lacydes spectabilis extends from Eastern Europe in an easterly direction to China . The species prefers to colonize steppe-like terrain and mountain slopes with little vegetation up to altitudes of 2800 meters. It was also found in gardens and parks.
Subspecies
In addition to the nominate form Lacydes spectabilis spectabilis , which occurs in Russia , Kazakhstan , Ukraine and Central Asia , two other subspecies are known:
- Lacydes spectabilis annellata ( Christoph , 1887), Balkans , Elburs Mountains
- Lacydes spectabilis sheljuzhkoi Dubatolov , 1996, Armenia , Turkey
Way of life
The main flight time of the nocturnal moths falls from August to October. Both sexes are very attracted to artificial light sources . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various low-growing plants, especially Artemisia species .
