The Laguna Canyon is a canyon in southern Orange County in the US state of California , in the south-west by the San Joaquin Hills runs. It ends on the Pacific Ocean at Laguna Beach .

geography

The Laguna Canyon begins as a wide valley south of Irvine and narrows at Laguna Beach to a steeply sloping gorge. The California State Route 133 crosses the entire valley floor, while the California State Route 73 crosses the gorge to the southeast. Much of the canyon spans the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park to the west. To the east, the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park and the towns of Aliso Viejo and Laguna Woods cover parts of the gorge.

history

Before parts of the Laguna Canyon were placed under nature protection, there were plans to build a residential area that would be named Laguna Laurel . However, the 8.7 square kilometer settlement was discarded in the 1990s when the city of Laguna Beach bought the site to protect the landscape. The Laguna Coast Wilderness Park opened in 1993. A few years later, the construction of California State Route 73 provoked renewed civil protests. The road that was supposed to cross the valley was nevertheless completed.

A forest fire destroyed over 65 square kilometers of land in Laguna Canyon in 1993. The fire was driven by the strong Santa Ana winds , causing the flames to reach heights of up to 61 meters.
