The Laguna Lagunillas is a lake in the Andes - Altiplano in Puno region in Peru .
Location in the vicinity
The lake is located in the province of Lampa at a distance of seventy kilometers west of Lake Titicaca at an altitude of 4174 m and has an area of about 65 square kilometers . It is eighteen kilometers long and almost six kilometers wide and reaches a maximum depth of 47.6 meters. The lake is drained via the Río Coata to Lake Titicaca. In 1995 a dam was built at the outflow of the lake to regulate the outflow. About 12 km east-northeast of the lake is the small town of Santa Lucía .

The climate is cool and dry because of the inland location and is characterized by a typical daytime climate, in which the mean temperature fluctuations between day and night are usually significantly greater than the seasonal temperature fluctuations.
The average annual temperature in the region is 4 ° C and varies between 0 ° C in June and July and 6 ° C from November to January. The annual precipitation is only 700 mm, with a pronounced dry season from May to August with monthly precipitation below 15 mm, and significant precipitation only from December to March with more than 100 mm monthly precipitation.

The lake is an important habitat for birds such as orinocogans ( Neochen jubata ), Andean flamingo ( Phoenicoparrus andinus ), chile flamingo ( Phoenicopterus chilensis ) and Inca divers ( Podiceps occipitalis ).
colonization
The region around the Laguna Lagunillas is only sparsely populated, but the lake is intensively fished. At the same time, the Laguna Lagunillas is an important drinking water reservoir for the Puno region.
