The Laguna Verde ("Green Lagoon") is a lake in the Andina Eduardo Abaroa National Park in southwestern Bolivia . It is located at the foot of the Licancabur volcano at 4,329 m.
Mineral content and color
The striking color is caused by a high proportion of minerals such as magnesium , calcium carbonate , lead and arsenic . The color changes between light turquoise and dark green depending on the strength of the wind and the sediments that it throws up . The special mineral content is also held responsible for the fact that there are no flamingos in Laguna Verde . These can be observed in large numbers in the directly adjacent Laguna Blanca , which has a different mineral composition.
reachability
The Laguna Verde can be reached with an off-road vehicle from San Pedro de Atacama (in Chile, approx. 70 km away) after passing the Bolivian border. The Bolivian entry and exit modalities must be observed. Nevertheless, 3-5 day tours are offered starting from the Bolivian cities of Uyuni or Tupiza .
