The Ljubljana Castle ( Slovenian Ljubljanski grad ) is a castle complex above the city center of Ljubljana ( German Laibach ), the capital of Slovenia . It is an important landmark in the city. Originally a medieval fortress, the Ljubljana Castle was probably built for the first time in the 11th century. The castle's current floor plan was created in the 15th century, while most of the buildings date from the 16th and 17th centuries. The castle was used for defense and military purposes and was the seat of the Lords of Carniola from the first half of the 14th century . It was used for other purposes from the early 19th century and is now an important cultural venue and major tourist attraction. The castle is depicted next to a dragon on the city arms of Ljubljana.

Since 2006 an inclined elevator has been connecting Krekplatz (Krekov trg) in downtown Ljubljana with the castle.
