The Lake Barlee is a salt lake in the west of the Australian state of Western Australia , about 500 kilometers northeast of Perth and about 240 km northwest of Kalgourlie on the border between the local government areas Shire of Sandstone and Menzies Shire . Lake Barlee has an east-west extension of approx. 108 km and a north-south extension of approx. 80 km. Usually the lake is dry. It fills up every 10 years on average; then it takes a little longer than 1 year for all of the water to evaporate again. If there is water in the lake, it is an important breeding ground for water birds.
The following settlements can be found on the shores of Lake Barlee: Lake Barlee in the west, Cashmere Downs a few kilometers from the north shore, Perinvale O / C on the east shore and Mount Elvire on the peninsula, which penetrates the lake from the south. All settlements can only be reached via unpaved roads. The southern peninsula is part of the Mount Elvire Conservation Area .
history
Lake Barlee was discovered by John Forrest in 1869 . Forrest's expedition, which was looking for the long-missing Ludwig Leichhardt , sank in the mud when they wanted to cross the salt lake on March 19. After getting the horses out of the mud, they prowled around the lake for almost a week. On March 25, Forrest climbed a hill in the area and from there saw the vast expanse of the lake. He then named it after Frederick Barlee (1827-1884), colonial secretary of Western Australia.

Other waterfowl that have been shown to breed on this lake are black swans , Australian kasarkas , rose-eared ducks , white-headed wagtails ( Himantopus leucocephalus ) and red-capped yolk ( Charadrius ruficapillus ).
