Boat building on Lake Bennett during the 1897–98 gold rush |
The Lake Bennett , officially Bennett Lake is a lake in the Canadian province of British Columbia and the Yukon Territory .
The 96.8 km² and 41 km long lake has an average depth of 61.9 m. Bennett Lake is drained to neighboring Tagish Lake via the short Natasaheeni River .
During the Klondike gold rush at the end of the 19th century, prospectors who came inland from Skagway or Dyea via the Chilkoot or White Pass used the lake as a starting point for their onward journey to Dawson in boats on the Yukon . The White Pass & Yukon Route railway line, which opened in 1898, still connects Skagway with the southern end of Lake Bennett. Places on the lake are Carcross and the abandoned Bennett .
In the summer, you can fish for lake trout, arctic grayling and pike .
