The Lake Chaubunagungamaug (also Webster Lake , Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg and several other unofficial name) is a lake east of Webster in the US state of Massachusetts  - about 70 kilometers southwest of Boston , near the border with Connecticut area. The relatively insignificant lake is known for its numerous alternative names, one of which is the longest place name in the United States of America .

The Nipmucks and other tribes gave it a number of similar names that are barely pronounced by the vast majority of the population around Webster. Hence she calls it Webster Lake . The spelling of the long name often varies, even on official signs near the lake.

The approximate meaning of the name Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg is "English with the Manchaug at the fishing grounds on the border". Manchaug was the name of one of the tribes that lived on the shores of the lake known as the Chaubunagungamaugg, or "border fishing grounds", before the arrival of the English. The lake was a well-known fishing spot on the border of several tribal areas and was therefore often used as a meeting place.

Larry Daly, editor of the Webster Times , wrote an amusing article about the lake and the dispute over the meaning of its name. He suggested the ironic translation "You fish on your side, I fish on my side, nobody fish in the middle", which met with so much public acceptance that the actual translation is very little known.
