Lake Colorado City is a reservoir on Morgan Creek , in the Colorado River basin in the US state of Texas . It is located about 4 miles southwest of Colorado City in central Mitchell County .

General

Although the official name of the dam is Lake Colorado City Dam , it is commonly referred to as Morgan Creek Dam . The reservoir is owned by the Texas Electric Service Company . It is also operated by her and has an area of ​​around 6.5 km².

The normal capacity is 39,034 m³, the maximum capacity is 87,223 m³. The dam height is 24.68 m and is 637  m above sea level . If the dam sinks too low, water can be pumped in from Champion Creek Reservoir to maintain normal production capacity.

The main water consumer of the reservoir is the regional industry. Because of the adjacent Lake Colorado City State Park , the reservoir is used a lot for recreational activities such as fishing, diving, paddling and swimming and is also the main supplier of water to nearby Colorado City .

history

When the construction of the dam began in 1948, the state of Texas granted the permission for the annual distribution of 6,785 m³ to the urban and private infrastructure, industry as well as the usufruct for thermal power plants . The then contractor Harry Campbell completed the project in September 1949.

The use of the water for power plants began in June 1950; In the 1960s, six power plants were already generating electricity with a capacity of 833,000 kW.
