The lake nabugabo (Lake Nabugabo) is a lake in the Ugandan district Masaka , about 15 km east of the city Masaka .

description

It has a maximum length of 8.2 km and a maximum width of 5 km. The marshy lake lies in front of the shores of Lake Victoria and was separated from Lake Victoria by a sand barrier 3,700 years ago.

The lake is known as a bathing lake, as there should be no bilharzia risk there. There are a few simple hotels that can be easily reached by taxi from Masaka.

Flora and fauna

Loudetia , Miscanthidium violaceum , Nymphaea lotus and Nymphaea caerulea , papyrus , Vossia cuspidata and peat moss grow on its banks . Since separating from Lake Victoria, at least five endemic species of cichlid have emerged in the lake.

In the 1960s, the cichlid species Oreochromis niloticus , Oreochromis leucosticus and Coptodon zillii , as well as the Nile perch ( Lates niloticus ) were released for fish production, which has very negative consequences for the natural ecosystem of the lake.
