Lake Neepaulin is a small man-made lake in Wantage Township in Sussex County , New Jersey, United States . The lake in the catchment area of Papakating Creek - a tributary of the Wallkill River - was created in the 1950s through the construction of a dam , which dammed an unnamed mountain stream. The creek now known as Neepaulakating Creek didn't get its name until 2002.

geography

Lake Neepaulin was created by building a dam on Neepaulakating Creek. The headwaters of the creek is about 600 m northwest of the northern end of the lake, south of County Route 650 (Libertyville Road) about halfway between the hamlet of Libertville in Wantage Township and Sussex . Lake Neepaulin is 155 m above sea level. The lake is located in the center of a privately owned housing estate. Below the dam, the creek has a length of 1.5 miles, then it flows into Papakating Creek, a tributary of the Wallkill River . The stream, lake and its catchment area are located in the Kittatinny Valley , which is subject to black slate and limestone of the Martinsburg Formation and whose soils are of glacial origin.

According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), two lake settlements in the Papakating Creek basin - on Lake Neepaulin and on nearby Clove Acres Lake - contribute to the pollution of Papakating Creek with phosphates . They have their origin in the fertilizer introduced from the lawns of local residents or nearby farms and the large populations of geese that live on the lakes.

history

In the 1950s, a contractor dammed a then-unnamed watercourse northwest of Sussex, creating Lake Neepaulin. This lake was in the center of a privately financed housing estate. The name of the lake is a play on words made up of the names of this contractor's children. In 2014, Wantage Township acquired the lake from the former non-profit management company and gave the township residents access to the lake for recreational purposes.
