Lake Street Dive is an American indie jazz, pop and soul band that was formed in 2004 at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston , where Rachael Price (vocals), Mike "McDuck" Olson (trumpet, guitar) , Bridget Kearney (double bass) and Mike Calabrese (drums) studied. The band was named after a main shopping street in Olson's hometown Minneapolis and the local "Dives" (pubs with a stage).

Concept and story

The addition to the name also emphasizes the current character of the band: Catchy, minimalist soul jazz music for a (apparently) small audience, which is characterized by virtuosity as well as originality and humor. In fact, the original plan of the quartet around founder Mike Olson was to put together an avant-garde country band. However, in the interplay of the jazz-trained members, who were inspired by classic pop and rock history, something crystallized that hardly shows any country influences. "We are now a pop band that is heavily oriented towards soul and rock," Olson is quoted as saying. But that's not supposed to be a real definition of the band that keeps the option open for future development. "We play what we would like to hear ourselves," says Bridget Kearney, bassist and songwriter for the quartet.

The band, which defends itself against a genre definition, creates an independent sound with little technical effort, which is based entirely on individual skills and shared musicality. Mike Calabrese: “We want to sound like Motown and the Beatles are celebrating a party” and “(...) try to write catchy tunes that make people dance”.

Kearney won an award in the jazz category of the 2005 John Lennon Songwriting Contest . The award enabled the band to record their first self-published CD In This Episode in 2006 . After signing with Signature Sounds Records , the album Lake Street Dive was released in 2011 .

In May 2012, the EP Fun Machine was released , which except for Rachael Price's Clear a Space cover versions (including George Michaels Faith , Paul McCartney's Let me roll it ) in the band's typical sound. A tweet by Kevin Bacon , who drew attention to the Youtube clip for I Want You Back (Original Jackson Five ) produced by Greg Liszt , caused considerable publicity . In September Bridget Kearney announced that she was leaving Joy Kills Sorrow in order to focus primarily on Lake Street Dive.

In 2013 an extensive US tour with over 150 gigs followed and an invitation to T-Bone Burnett's Another Day, Another Time concert (a promotional event for Inside Llewyn Davis of the Coen Brothers in September of that year). Lake Street Dive performed in Germany for the first time in late autumn.

Bad Self Portraits was published in February 2014 . The release was delayed by the singer's contract with Claire Vision Productions , a label in which Tom Price, Rachel's father, is involved. The album only contains the band members' own compositions; Kearney contributed five, Calabrese and Olson three each of the songs. In May 2014 Lake Street Dive were again on German stages as part of a European tour.

In 2015 the band switched to Nonesuch Records . In February 2016, the album Side Pony, produced by Dave Cobb in Nashville, was released . In April of that year, Lake Street Dive was a guest in five German cities.

Free yourself up was released in May 2018 . The album was again produced in Nashville, this time by Dan Knobler. Seven of the ten songs were penned by Bridget Kearney or Kearney and Olsen, three more were contributed by Calabrese and Olsen.

The band's headquarters are now in Brooklyn .
