The Lake Wampanoag Wildlife Sanctuary is a 368 acres (1.5 square kilometers ) comprehensive protected area south of the eponymous lake at Gardner in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .
Protected area
The protected area attracts comparatively few visitors each year, but it has an all the more rich flora and fauna, including elk , bears , deer , lynx and coyotes . American red spruces and balsam firs stand in the forest areas . The ecologically managed grassland provides a habitat for blackbirds and grass pods as well as a large variety of dragonflies and butterflies. There are 1 mi (1.6 km ) of hiking trails available to visitors.
